Eileen Gray’s modernist villa E-1027 crowdfunding campaign closed..

October 18, 2018

Cap Moderne’s crowdfunding campaign has now closed. Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the news, spread the word and helped make it possible to replicate some of the precious pieces that made E-1027 special. It is my hope that the villa will be completely restored and everyone will have access to it. Eileen Gray was not only a furniture designer and architect, but a pioneer of the Modern Movement. Her story is an important one, and her life an interesting one. If you want to learn more about her or the continuing restoration initiative, you can visit the Cap Moderne site.

Still time to help Cap Moderne raise funds for Eileen Gray’s iconic E-1027.

The crowdfunding campaign for Eileen Gray’s modernist masterpiece E-1027 is nearing its end. I know I have told you many details in my last news post, but after visiting this past summer I think it is important to tell as many people as possible. This particular campaign is to restore some elements in the house that truly show the architect’s personality and spirit. Most of the fixed furniture has to be replicated by drawings she left or old photos. It is not a simple task. As you probably know the house was left unrecognizable, and after the restoration in 2012, E-1027 was empty. Two cupboards remained, one in the bathroom and one in the guest bedroom. The fixed furniture, as well as the moveable freestanding pieces told the story of Gray’s design and how the villa should be lived in. Thanks to Cap Moderne and Tim Benton I am able to share views of both the inside and outside of the villa with these wonderful videos.

I recently got my hands on some polaroids taken by architectural photographer François Halard . His exclusive photos of E-1027 can only be purchased through Cap Moderne’s crowdfunding page, but I was told I can give you a sneak peak through the polaroids he provided from the kind folks at Cap Moderne. So this is a bit of a treat isn’t it? Please have a look and if you are so inclined get the word out! Ms. Gray is too important in the history of women in modernism to let her legacy be forgotten. Thanks so much for taking the time to read. It is much appreciated, always.

EILEEN GRAY’S ICONIC MODERNIST VILLA E-1027, ROQUEBRUNE-CAP-MARTIN 2018

EILEEN GRAY’S ICONIC MODERNIST VILLA E-1027, ROQUEBRUNE-CAP-MARTIN 2018

At the end of summer one of my long-time modernist dreams finally came true. We were able to visit Eileen Gray’s E-1027 villa built on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. You can imagine our excitement stepping into an important piece of history, this icon of modern architecture; not to mention my complete admiration for Eileen Gray, her life and work. She has been such an inspiration to me for a very long time. More on this later..

Because of timing and importance, this isn’t one of my usual entries. This is more of a call to action if you will. We can help further the restoration of this modernist icon and preserve the legacy of a most amazing woman, Eileen Gray. Restoration and preservation of gems like this are important to us, as I think it must be to anyone who takes the time to read here. It is not just about a building, a person; but about safeguarding an essential time in history, not only for enthusiasts like us, but for future generations.

Over the years after Eileen moved out, the house fell into major disrepair.  It was rescued by the French National Trust in 2000. In 2014 the non-profit Association Cap Moderne was set up to protect this special place. It is with this charge they aim to preserve any structural work already taken place, and restore the house and surrounding buildings to their historically correct completion.

This is where we can help.  They have started a crowdfunding campaign with INDIEGOGO in the hopes of raising enough money to restore all of Eileen’s fixed and freestanding furniture inside the villa.  To Eileen they were as much a part of the architecture of E-1027 as the building itself. The money raised will also go towards providing disabled access to the building so that anyone who wishes can visit this enchanting place, and dream a little dream..

Below I’ve included video about the campaign and E-1027.  If you want to get involved and become a part of this amazing journey, click here  or copy this link into your web browser: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/irish-female-bisexual-genius#/

It is not only about money, though every little bit helps. It is also about getting the word out. I know some of you have already donated which is amazing. This is an important cause for us, so we appreciate you taking the time to read this, and maybe passing it along.  For the love of Eileen Gray, let’s help preserve her place in history.
