The Bauhaus celebrates 100 years. Founded by architect Walter Gropius in 1919, the school and its unprecedented program of bringing together fine arts, craftsmanship and architecture as a “total work of art” would begin a modernist movement like no other. While the Bauhaus had its start Weimar, Germany; we begin our account of the celebration of the centennial here, at the Bauhaus Building in Dessau.

In the South of France between Monaco and Menton lies Cap-Martin, a modernist oasis with a storied past. Eileen Gray’s modern Villa E-1027, nestled into the coastline 100 feet above the Mediterranean Sea, was not only ahead of its time architecturally. Completed in 1929 the architect’s unique vision for interior design; "camping style" allowed for the transformable room - the very definition of functionalism.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s “Less is More” approach was exceptionally realized in Villa Tugendhat.  Located in the affluent neighborhood of Černá Pole in Brno, Czechoslovakia, it is now celebrated as one of the most significant and forward-thinking modernist structures in the world..
